How to find a digital marketing job?

There are multiple ways to find a digital marketing job. It all depends what kind of a job you are interested in, including:

  • full-time job in the company

  • freelance digital marketing projects

  • running your own digital marketing agency

Also, as digital marketing is a very robust field, you need to ask yourself a question whether you want to do all digital marketing related tasks (possible in smaller companies) or become an expert in one (or more) areas of digital marketing (more typical for medium and large companies), including:

  • Social media marketing and advertising

  • PPC/search engine advertising

  • Search engine optimization

  • Content marketing

  • Digital marketing automation

  • Email marketing

  • Digital analytics

  • Lead generation and sales support

Assuming you have no previous experience, first you should gain the necessary knowledge and skills for the task. Less and less companies are willing to hire a person that is completely green. Start with taking some free or cheap courses that cover all aspects of digital marketing and provide certifications, for example for theoretical course you can choose Google course.

For a practical digital marketing course, I can recommend my own course Master digital marketing and advertising within 5 hours, now with almost 90% discount. As an additional benefit you will know which areas of digital marketing are the most interesting for you.

Once you have some skills and knowledge it’s good to start with some small freelance jobs. Go to the portals like upwork.com or fiverr.com set-up the account and try to win your first job. You can even do it for free for start to gain essential experience. As an alternative you can offer your digital marketing services for a small fee to local businesses near you, like grocery stores or bookstores.

Create your portfolio of projects, it can be done in a pdf form or even better included on your own website. If you don’t have a website you can follow the step-by-step guide here

Set-up your profiles on different social media platforms. Post regularly and try to build your own brand. Position yourself as an expert. Post info about projects you have done, interesting news from the digital marketing industry and more. The key is to be consistent.

Once you have something to show, you can apply for a full-time job or internship to start. You have to differentiate yourself from other candidates. Prepare a video and present yourself, talk about your achievements, projects, social media profiles, certificates and how you can help your new company.

After a couple of years of working in different companies you will know how to work with clients and conduct successful business. You can then think about opening your own digital marketing agency and be independent.
